One of the things that make collecting old china interesting is the history behind the pieces. T are many antique porcelain items that are no longer used, usually due to new technologies. Many people do not know what a condensed milk can holder is, or why it was used. In the years before the refrigerator was a common household appliance, the Victorian women (who had a piece of china for everything!) served condensed milk for the dining table in an attractive condensed milk container holder. Most had a hole in the bottom of the jar, for pushing the can out for removal. We are listing other pieces of antique porcelain; see our other auctions for more hard-to-find old china. This condensed milk can holder or container was manufactured Charles Haviland in Limoges, France. It is factory decorated in autumn colors; gold-yellow flowers, perhaps a sunflower. The background is white and t is shadow foliage in a light gray, and a more prominent floral in a sage green. We love the handles as they resemble the way grapevine twines around small branches; and they are trimmed in gold. The rims of the lid and of the jar are decorated with gold daubs (lightly sponged gold areas). This set does not have a liner. Some did not have liners, most did.
