FABULOUS SIMPLE ELEGANCE RARE HAVILAND LIMOGES CHOCOLATE POT "STUNNING MIXED FLORAL ON THE RANSON BLANK" This is a beautiful and rare Haviland Limoges Chocolate Pot with a beautiful mixed floral pattern on the popular Ranson blank. I believe the pattern is called Norma, but I am not positive. This is one of nicer Haviland patterns you will come across. The design on this Chocolate Pot is a floral design with pink & yellow rambling flowers, on delicate green vines and leaves. The flowers and colors are beautiful. Please be sure to look at the photos carefully to make sure it matches your pattern as there are many patterns that look a lot alike. This Chocolate Pot is made of the finest Limoges Porcelain. This fine porcelain was made from clay that came only from the Limoges region of France. The Haviland brands are one of the most famous and sought after makers of Limoges china. Chocolate pot history is interesting…Europeans started consuming hot chocolate in the 1600s. Before cocoa powder was used beginning in 1828, they boiled ground cacao seeds with milk or water and skimmed off the cocoa butter that rose to the top. The resulting beverage was served from a lidded pot with a short spout located high on one side to keep the leftover cocoa butter that settled at the bottom from clogging it. This set with beautiful colors, and detailing on both the Ranson blank and the pattern would be a wonderful addition to your collection. The stunning colors of the mixed colored flowers with light green vines makes this set a must have for collectors. This piece is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or flakes, there is little or no wear to the pattern. The Chocolate Pot measures approx. 10 ½ tall. As with all antique china, there may be a factory glaze skip or dot, but nothing that takes away from this beautiful piece. I normally sell items from sets and most Haviland patterns have slight variations in the amount and placement of the pattern designs on the individual pieces making very few pieces in the same set identical. Photos are brighter than the item. THIS SET HAS A FABULOUS UNUSUAL HAVILAND PATTERN, SO DONT MISS IT!!!! The marks on the bottom of this Chocolate Pot is the green under glazed "Haviland over France" in an arc, the overglazed decorating mark is Haviland and Company over Limoges in red. The under-glaze mark is Haviland mark #12 in The Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges. These marks date this piece from 1893 to 1930. The history of LIMOGES Porcelain is interesting, Limoges porcelain designates hard-paste porcelain produced by factories near the city of Limoges, France beginning in the late 1700s, but does not refer to a particular manufacturer. In 1841 Haviland decided to establish his own china factory in Limoges, France, taking advantage of the rich findings of kaolin (china clay) in the area as well as of the presence of local craftsmanship due to a long tradition in china manufacturing. The high quality clay gives the porcelain its strength and pure white color, one of the reasons why Limoges porcelain is so popular up to the present day.
