This is an oval vegetable tureen or casserole by Haviland & Co of Limoges, France, pattern # 10788, Schleiger # 245. The shape is Schleiger # 9, called Marseille by Haviland, and it features elegant embossed scrolls and fan shaped scallops along the edge. The flowers are light blue against a background of green leaves. There are also touches of brown on the flowers, and brown branches. It's a very attractive tureen, there is a lot of embossing and the flowers are everywhere, even the interior.
The base is marked "Haviland France" in green, and "Haviland & Co - Limoges" in red. It also has the pattern # 10788. The inside of the lid also has pattern number also. The backstamps date this piece between 1894 - 1931. The casserole measures about 9 1/2" wide, not including the handles, and it stands about 4 1/4" tall not including the handle. The tureen is in excellent condition, there are no chips or cracks. The gold appears to have very little wear, and the flowers are bright and intact. I can find only very minor utensil marks on the bottom interior. There are some scuffs on two sides of the base, they aren't really noticeable, they are probably from the way the tureen was stored. It's a wonderful piece of Haviland that would make a most welcome present, or a fine addition to your collection.
