She was closely associated with Diego Rivera who she studied under and assisted on several important frescoes. She was a social activist supporting the rights of women and children, Peace and the protection of the Mendocino Highlands. Born in El Centro Imperial Valley California near the Mexican border, her family were social activists, her mother introduced her to Diego Rivera as a young girl in Mexico City, she studied with Rivera in Mexico from 1926-1927 and received her BA from UC Berkeley in 1936 where she was editor of the student paper and very active on campus, she also studied at CSFA.
