For auction is an H. HAWKE Bit Brace with seven H. HAWKE bits--five center bits that range in diameter from 1 1/8" down to 1/4", and two countersinks. The brace wood appears to be quarter-sawed beech with a pad of another hardwood. The chuck, which works fine, bushing for the pad, and inlay are all brass with steel screws (all present). The chuck button reads " H. HAWKE SHEFFIELD ," and shows a eagle clutching arrows. The medallion in the pad reads " H. HAWKE SOLLY WORKS SHEFFIELD ," and shows an embossed eagle clutching arrows and a branch. An owner's name "L. ESTES" is stamped into one of the brass inserts. The brace is 13 5/8 inches in length, and has a throw of 3 1/2 inches (center of handle to center of pad). There are a few cracks showing in the pad, but it is intact, nothing moving, and there is wear over all. all of the bits can be used with the brace, but only some seat in the catch. Not sure of the vintage, probably first half of the nineteenth century.
