The Hawker Sea Hurricane was a basic modification of the standard Hurricane, allowing the aircraft to be launched from small catapult platforms on converted merchant ships. As these ships had no flight deck, the Hurricane was expected to provide air cover during attacks by enemy aircraft and then to ditch, with the pilot hoping to be recovered by one of the convoy vessels. By October of 1941, larger merchantmen fitted with small flight decks gave the Hurricanes the possibility of landing rather than ditching. Shortly tafter, escort carriers began to appear and the Sea Hurricanes assumed a conventional carrier-borne fighter role. This superb replica is Franklin Mint/Armour #FMB579, Royal Navy Sea Hurricane Mk XII, 800 Squadron, Operation Torch .
