his wonderful mid-1800's star quilt is in rough shape with heavy wear to the delicate Turkey Red vine print and areas of brown staining, but it has some fabulously creative and charming borders. Pieced-in slender arcs of white curve through the red calico borders and better yet, each little corner square of the border features a bold white heart and four little white polka dots again all pieced into the red rather than appliqud. It's all fantastically expressive and folky, a wonderful little touch of out-of-the-box creativity from a century and a half ago. And even with the fabric disintegration and staining, it all still adds up to some exceptional graphic punch. SizeThe quilt measures about 76" x 98" . The blocks are about 9 inches square and the borders about 7 inches wide. Quilting The hand-quilting is delightful, with 7-10 little stitches to the inch, counting on the top side of the quilt only. The star blocks are quilted in nesting Vs over each quarter with lines spaced as little as 1/2 inch apart. The open blocks are quilted in either nesting clamshells or double-line diagonal square gridding. The borders are quilted in lowslung curves that echo the shape of the pieced white arcs. The corners blocks with the hearts are crisply gridded with a diagonal square mesh, lines spaced 5/8-inch or less apart. Construction The quilt is entirely handmade and the crisp hand-piecing features fine small stitches. Binding, Batting & Backing The super narrow self-binding is rolled from the back and hand-stitched tight on the front. It's 1/4 inch or much less wide. The one part of the quilt in excellent shape, it shows no wear and just light toning. The batting is whisper thin and even. The backing is a beautiful sturdy ivory muslin in excellent condition with just water stains and light areas of toning especially along the fold lines. Condition This early quilt's condition is clearly rough. The main issues are surface staining and the heavily weakened condition of the early Turkey Red calico which allows the batting to peek through here and there throughout. There are some sweet little early attempts to stem the disintegration with little areas of hand-mending. Image 2 of 28 28 images with captions tell this quilt's story.
