This is one of the rare Hawaiian dancer figurines by Swiss-born California potter Hedi Schoop. One of the most talented California giftware designers, Ms. Schoop's company produced ceramics from about 1938 to 1958. This figurine was designed by Ms. Schoop herself, and as shown in the Collector's Encyclopedia of California Pottery , each Hawaiian dancer was done in a different color scheme (page 62). This figure is 11 3/4 inches tall and has no cracks or chips. As shown in the photo, it is signed on the bottom, "Hedi Schoop." In the interest of accuracy, I did find a small chip or flake about 1/2 cm. in diameter. It is somewhat hard to spot since it is on the bottom edge of the hula skirt, which has a rough texture anyway, and is the same color. It is approximately w the hula skirt flairs at its highest point.
