Description: Early 20 th century pottery whiskey sample or "nip" in the shape of a Prussian spikedmilitary helmet with an embossed eagle on the front. The name "HELMET RYE" is impressed on the front visor. Helmet Rye was marketed by Max Fruhauf & Co., which operated in Cincinnati during the period 1901-1919. This hard-to-find little nipper has an attractive orangey Rockingham glaze and was probably made by one of the Ohio Valley potteries. Length is 3 ¼"; width is 2 ½"; height to top of spike is 4 1/8". Condition: These are notoriously difficult to find with the original "spike" stopper, so this is quite a rare find. This piece is bright and shiny. T is a shallow ½" by ¼" flake off the underside of the visor under the letter "L" which is slightly visible from above (see pictures), and a couple of other minor fleabites on the underside edge. T is also some very minor chipping to the top of the spike. We take great care to note everything possible regarding the condition of our items and guarantee our descriptions are accurate.
