Exciting!!!... This is the word that best describes this stunning large Hen on a Nest!!!... The large size... and combination of glass colors makes this one of the most unique... and attractive Hens in this collection. This is a large Hen... measuring 6 inches tall... to the tip of Her tail which is the highest point... a bit over 7 inches long... and 5 & ½ inches across the top of the base. Both the Hen and the Nest appear to be in excellent condition. Our Hen has a delightful... Snowy White... Milk Glass body that's down right "striking"!!!... But what's even more exciting is Her gorgeous "Brick" Red head!!!... This is a time consuming... hands on operation... requiring the glass workers to retrieve the Red Glass from one furnace... and placing a small amount into the up-turned mold. Meanwhile a second worker is gathering the White Glass from a second furnace... which he then in turn places just the right amount into the mold to complete the operation. It might be a labor intensive... time consuming operation... but look at the stunning results!!!... The Slag Glass Nest (or base) is another remarkable piece of glass. It's made up of a combination of three different colors of glass. The most prevalent color is a deep rich Ruby Red... and through this runs graceful swirls of both Milk White... and a vibrant Egg Yoke Yellow. Its extremely rare to find "Bi-Color" Slag Glass anymore... and almost unheard of to come across a "Tri-Color" piece like this!!!... Like our Hen... this Nest also requires that extra effort on the part of the glass workers. They first retrieve a "grab" of molten glass from the furnace onto the "punty rod"... and then just a touch into the white glass furnace... and then another dip into the yellow glass. With the combination of glass colors on the end of the rod... he then gives it a slow spin as he deposits just the right amount into the mold. This "spin" is what gives the better quality slag glass pieces those sought after swirls in the finish product... and this Hen's Nest... is a prime example... of a talented glass worker's efforts. The only "Maker's" markings I find are on the inside top of the Hen... and the mark is a "M" in a "shield". I believe this is the mark for "Mosser Glass Company"... however... I believe that these Hens were first made by the "L. G. Wright Glass Company"... and that they first offered them sometime in the mid 1930's. With that Mosser Glass Company mark on the inside we'll assume that Mosser at some point in time acquired the molds for this delightful Lady. This is the "split tail" style Hen... which is much more desirable... than the "flat tail" style. Both pieces... top and bottom... are exceptional... each in its own unique way!!!... Several months ago a large collection/accumulation of Hens... Roosters... Cats... Horses... Ducks... Swans... Lions... Cows and more... came into our shop for sale. Some of these were in colors... and color combinations that I've not seen before. We've sold quite a few at local auctions... as well as on EBAY... but we still have many more to offer. So if you collect these "guys" (or gals!!!...)... stick with us... the best is yet to come!!!...
