Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) was a French painter and lithographer best known for his flower paintings and group portraits of Parisian artists and writers. In addition to his paintings, Fantin-Latour also created many imaginative lithographs, many inspired by the music of the great classical composers (most notably Berlioz and Wagner). This original lithograph was created for the French publication L'ESTAMPE MODERNE (Modern Prints). L'ESTAMPE MODERNE was a monthly portfolio which included four original prints by notable artists of the day. It was under the editorship of Ch. Masson and H. Piazza and printed by Champenois. This lithograph is entitled IMMORTALITE and depicts a winged woman, representing Immortality, who carries a palm leaf and scatters flowers. The lithograph is signed in the stone at the bottom left (see my close up photo). It is not pencil signed. This lithograph is tipped on to the backing sheet which carries the blindstamp of L'ESTAMPE MODERNE (a woman's head--see my close up photo of the blindstamp). The lithograph itself measures 13 5/8 inches x 9 5/8 inches; the backing sheet with the blindstamp measures 15 3/4 inches x 12 inches. A very beautiful piece.
