This is a wonderful cast bronze sculpture by the noted Art Nouveau artist and architect, Henri Jacobs (1864-1935) . Measures 19 3/4" high (including 2" tall marble base), 10 1/2" wide and 7" deep, and weighs 37 lbs. The piece depicts a lovely young woman wearing a bonnet and dress, which extends off her shoulders in a wavy wing-like pattern. Her bust narrows sharply to a waist wrapped by wavy material that disolves into an abstract, circular base. Base is solid marble and underside is covered in felt. Features a light chocolate brown patina. This piece is believed to be a later cast from the early 20th century. Signed "H Jacobs" on the rear.
Additional images forwarded upon request. A contemporary of Victor Horta (1861-1947) , Jacobs was one of a small handful of artists and architects responsible for developing the Art Nouveau movement in Brussels in the 1890s. The database of European auctions shows a handful of recent auction sales, generating an average sale price of $1,190. In May of this year, the Gallery Paul Andriesse in Amsterdam featured a retrospective of Jacobs' career entitled "Peintures, Paysages & Architectures". Additional Keywords: Bijan.
