One of the more important American realist artists of the 20th century specializing in watercolor, Henry Martin Gasser (1909-1981) received numerous awards during his distinguished career, including membership in the National Academy of Design, the American Watercolor Society, and the Salmagundi Club. A native of Newark, New Jersey, Gasser divided his time between creating chiefly urban scenes in America and beautiful views of Paris, the latter of which is superbly represented in this original watercolor of figures gathered around a book seller's stall on the Left Bank, with a passing bicyclist. In the background, one can see what appears to me to be a tower of the Louvre.I temporarily removed the watercolor from its original frame to photograph it without glare, and am happy to report that the piece is in excellent condition. The scene is painted on artist board, measures 8 inches by 10 inches, and is housed in its original frame measuring a total of 13 1/2 inches by 15 1/2 inches. The watercolor is signed and inscribed Paris by the artist at the lower left. On the reverse, there is a label giving further information about Gasser and his many awards. Since there is a reference in the description mentioning in the past tense Gasser's service as Director of the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art between 1946 and 1954, I am estimating
