Description Ancient & Honorable Artillery CompanyUp for auction is this fine, Vintage 14k gold ditary medal.Up for auction is this fine medal for the HAC. The top features a finely enameled bar with Court President at the top and Ex just above this. it is done in a nice powder blue and red enamel. Below this is a bar which reads 1637-1774. The ribbon has a nice orange/red, powder blue, and gold colored ribbon. At the bottom is a large piece which reads "National Society Women Descendants of the Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company." T is a raised cannon on the front. The back reads "Vivian S. Lord 780." This is also written on the back of the top bar. T is a J.E.C. makers mark and 14k gold stamp. I assume 780 to be a relatively low membership number due to the age of this society. Following is a history posted on their website - A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE "ANCIENTS" The Honorable Artillery Company was incorporated in London, England in 1537. It is the second oldest military organization in the world. Kings of England were included among its members from the time of its organization. As the first colonists settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, each group of settlers brought with them one or more professional soldiers to train them in their own defense and to command their militia. Many of these men were members of the Honorable Artillery Company of London. The officers and other gentlemen saw the need for a similar military organization in the New World in order to establish uniformity of military drill and tactics in the new colony. These prominent men applied for a Charter for that purpose in 1637...one hundred years after the founding of the Honorable Artillery Company of London. This Charter was finally granted in 1638. Thus, the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts became the oldest military organization in the New World, and the third oldest in the world. The position of the members of the Company in the social, civil and military life of the Colony indicates the respect which people entertained for the Company as well as the ability and prominence of its members. They were first in organizing churches and supporting them. They were prominent in framing and in administering the laws of the Colony...and later all of New England. They were foremost in the introduction of manufacturing and the extension of trade in New England and later expanded their influence to all of North America. They were the chief military minds of the Colony and among the first in its defense. Many of them were public benefactors, contributing of their considerable wealth to education, religion and charity. The members of the Company trod every battlefield of New England; they fought for freedom on foreign soil; they judged the courts; they pleaded at the bar; they instituted town governments; they were active in settling the towns of the frontier; they were among the founders of our great academic institutions. They became the progenitors of our substantial and dominant families of colonial descent. The medal weighs in at 17.2 grams. Accounting 2 grams for ribbon weight this contains $230 in gold scrap value alone. The medal measures just over 4" tall and is in excellent condition. I guarantee this badge to be 14K gold as stamped. The pin and clasp are in excellent, original, and wearable condition.
