HERKIMER DIAMOND The Herkimer Diamond...... Is considered to be the hardest Quartz ( a 7 on the Mohs' Scale ) & is considered to be the clearest Quartz in the world.These specimens are believed to be over 400 million years old. Genuine Herkimers are found only in upstate New York, in the Mohawk Valley Region. The specimens come in many different shapes & forms. They make great collector items and wonderful gifts. ( Please see below item description for definitions of common terms associated with Herkimers. I am just building this list & will add to it regularly. ) THIS ITEM This auction, is a great oppurtunity for a nice crystal/calcite specimen. One of the most fasinating things about Herkimers, is the variety of different formations that are found. This a beautiful piece, a nice 15 MM ,clear crystal, that is attached to calcite. ( in case you didn't know... calcite is the third most abundant mineral in the world ). So why not have a piece. The crystal has a small contact mark on it, otherwise it is very clean with one great termination exposed. On the back of this ( picture # 3 ) , t is a contact mark on the calcite. This was probably from a crystal during the formation.This piece weighs 126.8 grams, and is about 65 x 50 x 30 MM in size. A beautiful example of this type specimen, great collectors piece. Check out my other items ! PICTURES Taking pictures of crystals & Herkimer specimens can be very difficult. Light refraction can cause shadows,glare & dark spots. A lot of times, crystals are clearer than they might appear in a pictures.I try to use the most representative photo I can. On occasion I will use lighter or darker settings on my camera to highlight certain aspects of a specimen ( usually with crystal/ drusy combinations).You will always recieve the very item that is listed, not a look alike. Thanks very much for looking......Mark MAGNIFICATION..... I would recommend using different types of magnifying glasses to examine Herkimer Diamonds & Herkimer specimens. Many features of these wonderful minerals are highlighted by this ( i.e., striations, extra facets, etc. ) Also, a greater understanding of the terms associated with Herkimers can be gained. I use a couple of different types to examine and grade crystals. I use a simple 2x & 3x magnifying glass & I also use a 10x jewelers loupe. COMMON TERMS FOR HERKIMERS THE MATRIX ..........The hard rock that herkimers are formed in. Dolomite ( I like to call it limestone ), though a soft material, it can be very difficult to mine by hand. DRUSY ..........Is tightly compacted crystals. It's texture can be fairly fine to somewhat course, 1/2 mm to 2mm in size. It is found in the linings of pockets that the crystals are formed in.But is not always present. Colors can very greatly, from white to light grays, to a very deep and dark smokey hue. Drusy is extremely beautiful, it can be very illustrious and shine very brightly. I find it to be fascinating when t are water clear crystal attachments on dark drusy, absolutely beautiful. ANTHRAXOLITE ..........This is decaying plant life ( I also refers to this as carbon ). It has a black, coal like color to it.Anthraxolite ( when it was present during the formation of the crystal )can effect the color of crystals & drusy on occasion giving them a smokey hue or much darker appearance. It can come as an inclusion ( within ) appearing as a crystal , also known as phantoms. These are rare & are very fascinating. STRIATIONS ..........Are patterns & lines that are formed by two or more crystals are joined together or make "contact" ( hence ,contact mark ) during their formation. These striation marks take on the form of the crystal, ( they can look like facet lines ) . These can be seen internally on good clear crystals & of course externally. These lines & ma... read more
