ULTRA RARE ALL ORIGINAL HERMAN MILLER CHARLES EAMES DESIGNED RAR 1ST PROTOTYPE CROSSED-X ROD BASE WITH RARE SEA-FOAM GREEN ZENITH ROPE EDGE SHELL!! - 1949-50 initial pre-production short lived run manufactured by ZENITH PLASTICS. Well if you've been searching for the rarest Eames rocker you could find this is undoubtedly the one. This is a100% original pre-first year production Rope Edge Rocking Armchair on the short lived prototype X-cross front rod base,a Zenith RAR, designed by the great Charles Eames, manufactured by Zenith Plastics, Gardena, California in 1950 and distibuted by Herman Miller, Zeeland, Michigan, A1 vintage condition, no breaks, no cracks, no chips, no replacement parts, absolutely pristine, the pictures tell it all.
The extremely rare X-cross base has the front strut rods that actually cross each other from the front legs to the back legs. This configuration was quickly discontinued and redesigned due to the fact that the crossed rods would hit the back of your ankles during rocking motion and could potentially bind your outer angle bone when rocking back forward. It really isn't as bad as it sounds when you use it but physical comfort and ergonomics were paramount to Charles Eames so it was quickly redesigned. I recently had an early production rocker up for auction that shows the usual production base for comparison views - item# 320072258838 . This base is original black coated and shows no signs of wear what-so-ever, no breaks, rust, bends or rewelds with the exception of some possible minor rewelds to the seat mounting plates, they are done clean with no damage but they appear thicker than they typically are so I thought I should mention them. The runners are in excellent condition with typical bottom wear of hardwood runners with no gouges or breaks, completely intact - the side view best illustrates the true color and grain of the birch runners. The Shell is quite rare as well being the most sought after of the 4 colors that were initially produced - SEA FOAM GREEN. T is a distinct yet mellow light aqua/green tone throughout with subtle vibrancy to the fibers, the close-up image of the shock mounts/rope edge is the best representation of the actual color and texture, absolutely gorgeous, superfibrous, subtle, superb. The rope edge is clear through and runs the entire chair edge, and the shock mounts look as soft, clean and pliable as the day they were made. The checkerboard decal is still completely intact and legible with some minor scratch/flakes to the surface. This is an amazing and extremely rare predecessor sample of the iconic Eames Rocker chair over 55 years old...you won't be seeing this rare color with this rarer base again!! This item is used and vintage as described. Please ask questions before bidding, and don't bid if you don't intend to buy the item. Check out my feedback and bid with no worries! The chair will be shipped with the shell and base disassembled to conform to shipping limitations, reassembly is simply with the original 4 phillips head screws as shown in the photos of the chair bottom. Item will ship domestically for a fee of $50 while International destinations will run $100. Insurance costs for either will be additional and is required even though the chair is very durable and will be packaged with great consideration. All International bidders must bear in mind and be responsible for the customs regulations of their respective country since I have no way of doing that on my end
