A nice example of relatively unknown, but nonetheless multi-talented early 20th century feminine art movement pioneer: "Hermione Palmer Chase." This is a very strong example of her expressionistic fantasy landscapes. A very nice "strong" pallete on canvas 16"x20" great color Miss Palmer is well known in the ceramic world, Her copper haired head vases are among the most collectible ceramics in that genre. But it turns out this is only the tip of the iceburg in her voliminous body of work. I know this because I was lucky enough to find what was probably the bulk of her estate. This is probably correct because the estate included her personal album. This Album contained numerous newspaper articles, pictures, and documents which document her nearly sixty year career in art. Miss Palmer, is of course listed in Ask Art, has been in Who's Who in American art, is in Davenports, and is also listed in the California specialist art reference book Hughes. The problem is none of the above entities or publications tell her entire story as it relates to her contributions to art. It is my intention to avail all of this information to the above noted art journals so they can update her records. I will include below a short bio and a light overview of her accomplishments. In the meantime you have the opportunity to own an original piece of her work. Miss Palmer was born in 1905 and was the grand-niece of President Buchannan. She started her art career upon entering the University of Berkely in 1923. While at Berkely at the early age of 18 Miss Palmer was already a nationally syndicated cartoon artist. The name of her Cartoon character was Co-Ed Cora and it was the feature of the Berkely newspaper the Pelican. Her early ability as an illustrator will be shown with a couple of examples of her cartoons which were cut-outs of the San Francisco Herald the earliest of which was 1929. This does leave some measure of time bewteen her graduation from Cal which probably was 1926. The album does not really cover the period after her graduation until about 1929 but after that a complete picture of her entire art endeavors were t and are chronicled below. Miss Palmer worked as an illustrator from 1929 until about 1942 with College Humor, Life Magazine, Ballyhoo, and the most prolific New York's American Weekly which was nationally syndicated. She did all this while she was doing fashion pages in New York, and she was experimenting with ceramic head vases whose hair and eyelashes were made of copper. Kenneth Collins the advertising manager of the New York Times encouraged her into marketing these pieces. They among other ceramic works were well recieved. Miss Palmer moved her headquarters to Glendale w she rented a barn on the corner of Loz Feliz and San Fernando Road. She hired thirty fellow women workers and began serious production of her ceramics. During the period Miss Palmer was in the ceramics business she continued her work with illustrations and art. She did not market them at the time but I was very lucky to have found some of her early work she never put on the market. She began her formal art education at Otis art Institute in 1964 and studied along with all of the famous Californian artists including Rex Brandt and Phillip Dike. Miss Palmer also became a painting partner with the Famous Catholic nun Sister Mary Corita. From that time forward her interest turned toward the canvas. T is a picture which shows a two person exhibit held in 1977 celebrating 40 years in art. Her co-exhibitor was the Italian artist Mario DeFerrante also a listed California artist who worked in the modern abstract genre.
