This is a new reproduction Revolutionary War Hessian fire steel. It is based on an original that was found by a collector at a camp site used by Hessian troops near Trenton NJ. We know from the history books that t were several Hessian units attached to the British forces under Lord Cornwallis and stationed in and near Trenton - the Rall, the Alt Lossberg, and the von Knyphausen regiments. Can it truly be attributed to a Hessian unit? Hard to tell. It could have been dropped by most anybody who used that site over all the years before the striker was discovered in the early 1930's. All we have is the expert's claims. But it is a style that was used in several European countries at that time, as well as in the fur trade in North America from the early 1700's on up into the mid 1800's. Several of this style were also displayed in the Great Lakes Fur Trade Museum, and are pictured in the book Indian Trade Relics by Hothem. And a very similar one was found at the Civil War battlefield on Peach Tree Creek in Atlanta. Most are fairly plain, but the European ones tended to have a little more ornamentation on them. So the cross hatch chisel lines on the original do point towards its' origin in the Old World. This fire steel measures 3 7/16 inch by 1 1/16 inch by 1/8 inch thick. I hand forged this fire steel from 1095 high carbon tool steel, read more
