Caveat of the 1885-CC Morgan silver dollarI would like to share some information with collectors, graders and lovers of rare coins about my thoughts on the 1885-CC Morgan silver dollar from the Carson City Mint. It is information a warning a caveat about this very rare coin. First let's look at numbers. The 1889-CC Minted 350,000 of this rare Morgan Silver dollar. The 1885-CC had just 228,000 Minted. That is 122,000 less than the 1889-CC Morgan's, ever struck as a business strike. Furthermore, the Yeoman Red Book shows the value of the 1889-CC as approximately $1500.00 in Grade Very Fine 20. The 1885-CC when at a Grade of VF 20, is only $500.00. Now the top coin grading companies, would have you believe, these values are due to the population reports they track on these and most coins. Population reports being the number of coins submitted for grading and receiving a grade on said coins. Also, another somewhat unknown fact to some, is their belief of survivor ship of the coins and condition of most that survived. How can they say that because they believe the 1889-CC is to have had only a very few of those coins survive in higher Grades? Where, the 1885-CC is to have had many more survive and I might add grading at much higher values than the 1889-CC. There could be several reasons for this.
