You are bidding for a Vintage Cooke & Simms Dumpy level in working order, complete with metal case. The metal case shows signs of wear on the outside, but looks pretty good on the inside. The actual instrument itself is in working order, the optics are okay, and the spirit levels are also okay, although the one at the top of the instrument is somewhat scratched. This used to belong to my father-in-law, but has been in storage for a number of years. I hope it finds a good home. For interest, I have added some information on the makers below. This is obviously very solid and heavy, and it can either be collected from me, or I might be to deliver, depending where to. Alternatively, I can send it parcel post and the costs shown are for parcel post. The scientific instrument manufacturing business of T.Cooke & Sons was founded by Thomas Cooke in York in 1837. He was a self-taught optical engineer of great ability who from 1855 built his own factory on Bishophill, York, producing a great range of goods from spectacles, telescopes and surveying equipment to sundials, clocks and lathes. On his death in 1868 his sons took over the firm which continued to expand and export goods worldwide, particularly astronomical and surveying equipment.
