YOU ARE BIDDING A GORGEOUS PETOSKEY STONE HEAD THIS IS A COMPLETE COLONY I HAVE HAD THIS STONE IN MY COLLECTION FOR YEARS, IF I DON'T SELL IT IT WILL BE RETURNED TO MY COLLECTION THIS STONE HAS ENOUGH WEIGHT TO BE USED AS A PAPERWEIGHT 1 LB. 12 OZS. The Petoskey stone is a variety of Calcite. They are formed by the fossilization of the ancient living coral, Hexagonaria. These stones were a result of glaciation, in which sheets of ice plucked stones from the bedrock deep below, depositing them in the north part of Michigan 's lower peninsula. Petoskey stones are found on many beaches of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in the U.S. , as well as in some select Michigan rock quarries. The honeycomb patterned stone has a hardness from 4 to 5. The name Petoskey is a derivation of the name Petosegay. According to legend, Petosegay was the child of a descendant of French nobleman and fur trader, Antoine Carre and an Ottawa princess. Petosegay, meaning "rising sun" "rays of dawn" or "sunbeams of promise", was named after the rays of sun that fell upon his newborn face. In keeping with his promising name, Petosegay was a wealthy fur trader who gained much land and acclaim for himself and his tribe. He was remarked upon to have a striking and appealing appearance, and spoke English very well. In the summer of 1873, a few years before the Chiefs' passing, a city began on his land along the bay of Bear Creek. The settlers christened the newborn city Petoskey, the English translation of Petosegay . The value of Petoskey Stones depends on the following considerations: v quality of preservation of the corallite v size of stone v the stone's ability to take a high polish v esthetic appeal v how much of the stone has been polished (all sides, about half, less than half) All of my stones are buffed on a lapidary wheel to a high polish. I don't lacquer or polyurethane them. This stone is face polished. I WANT TO SELL THE STONE, NOT THE SHIPPING!!!!!!
