Hillary Rodham Clinton, American lawyer and wife of President Bill Clinton, won election in 2000 as United States senator from New York, becoming the only First Lady in US history to hold elective office. Hillary Rodham was born in 1947 in Chicago, the oldest child and only daughter of Hugh Rodham, who owned a drapery-making business, and Dorothy, a homemaker. An outstanding student, Clinton excelled in nearly every endeavor she undertook and was voted the student most likely to succeed. She graduated from Wellesley College with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1969. At Yale Law School she met her future husband, Bill Clinton, whom she married in 1975. Well matched temperamentally and intellectually, they were equally dedicated to public service. Clinton began teaching law at the University of Arkansas in 1974. In 1977 she founded Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families and joined the Rose Law Firm, where she practiced until 1992. After taking office, President Clinton chose her to head a special commission on health care reform, the most significant public policy initiative of his first year in office. Clinton drew criticism from those who favored a more traditional role for the first lady. The Congress of the United States could not reach agreement on the health care issue, so health care reform failed. Nonetheless, Hillary became a powerful symbol of the changing role and status of women in American society.
