This is a business size flown cover carried by the German airship Hindenburg on its first flight from Germany to the USA. The cover is post marked for New York on May 9, 1936 and for Petaluma, California on May 14, 1936. The cover has a block of stamps issued to commemorate the airship. The browning around the edges is typical of this stamp and results from the acidic nature of the gum used in manufacture. The cover has a nice clear stamped cachet in red and another stamped cachet showing that the envelope was carried Via Airship "Hindenburg".The cover is in overall good condition with some age related browning. T is some gentle corner rounding. The cover is made more notable by bearing the signatures of three individuals who played a role in the history of German lighter than air craft. The signatures were collected at a time later than the date of the cover. F.W. von Meister was the American representative of the Deutsche Zeppelin Rederei GmbH in New York. Hans von Schiller , one of the German officers close to Eckener, was on board the LZ-126/ZR-3 Los Angeles delivery flight in October 1924. He was also an officer aboard Graf Zeppelin (LZ-127) on most of its flights and, in 1937, skipper of the Graf. Heinrich Bauer , one of Eckener's airship officers, was elevatorman on the round-the-world flight of Graf Zeppelin and also on Graf's Arctic flight in 1931. He was Second Officer and a survivor of the Hindenburg's final flight. Bauer was also a skipper of the Hindenburg's sister ship, LZ-130 (Graf Zeppelin II).A nice collectible from the age of the great German airships.
