HIROSHIGE Japanese Woodblock Print MOON & GEESE
HIROSHIGE Full Moon over Takanawa from the series Famous Views of the Eastern Capital Date: original published in 1831 by the publisher Kawaguchiya Shozo, this Showa era strike published by Watanabe from recarved blocks Size: oban, approx.10.5" x 15.5" Condition: Fine, no flaws, uncirculated print, never framed Impression: Fine, solid keylines, nice surface texture, tight registration Color: Fine, deep saturated color and bleed through to verso Authentic hand carved and printed wood block print, nice impression, good bleed through, by 19th century landscape master Hiroshige. A FLIGHT OF GEESE decends over the bend in the Bay of Edo near the southern district of Takanoawa. To the left a few fishing boats are lying at anchor. A large full moon is silhouetted against the bokashi blue sky that runs across the upper edge of the print. Both the decorative border -- probably an allusion to the frames of Western paintings -- and the wisps of low-hanging clouds contribute to the Western feel of this composition. The position of the flight of geese, the stone gate and the signs, which are all conspicuous in the foreground, clearly suggest the influence of Western-style perspective, to which Hiroshige was to return at a later date. Takanawa was a long, narrow strip of coastland between Okido, the gate that marked the border of the city of Edo, and Shinagawa. Every traveller along the Tokaido Road to Kyoto had to pass it. This accounts for the signs and the stone gate, built in 1710 to replace a wooden gateway, w travellers had to show their travel documents. Supplies for the journey could be purchased from th row of stalls along the costal road and, of course, t were innumerable tea-houses and restaurants.
