This spectacular,and important Connecticut schoolgirl sampler descended in the historic STARK family;whose settling immigrant to America, Aaron Stark, was a kind of folklore legend in the early 1600s as part of the Connecticut/New London Colony....filling the early Colony records with unusual stories and memorable provenance! In addition to museum worthy family history and provenance, the folk art house sampler is a prototype of the very rare and important NORWICH BUILDING GROUP; the identifiable elements of thiis significant group usually included a side view 2 story house, tulip motifs, folky hearts, and a distinctive 8-petal pinwheel flower motif(see Hubers book pgs 84+85). Founding Stark family ancestor Aaron Stark came to America from Scotland in the 1620s and in 1627 joined with Rev. Joseph Hooker settling the Connecticut Colony. He soon joined forces with Captain John Mason and was a significant fighter in the War waged against the Pequot Indians to safeguard the new Connecticut/New London Colony. He was quite the historic rebel rouser and character. In 1639 he was ordered whipped and BRANDED WITH AN "R" ON HIS CHEEK!!! This was to punish him and let the others in the Colony knbow he was a "RAVISHER" of women and to beware.
