is a beautiful and rare dark blue American View Historical Staffordshire platter. This platter was made by James & Ralph Clews (1815-1834), and features "A Winter View of Pittsfield, Massachusetts." This scene features the First Congregational Church (1793 - 1853), the old town hall, and the Berkshire Hotel (1826 - 1866). The elm tree featured in the center was struck by lightning in 1861. This platter is in EXCELLENT condition! The glaze is bright and original and the platter has absolutely no chips, cracks and no repairs or restorations. The transfer is dark and crisp with lots of detail. T are about nine extremely negligible utensil glaze surface scratches that keep this platter from absolute mint condition. T are 3 very small stilt marks on the front as well as the back. T is some minor blue color running on the back in small areas. The back of the platter is bright white with no crazing. The back is impressed with the "CLEWS WARRANTED STAFFORDSHIRE" crown mark, as well as blue transfer cartouche that identifies the view. It measures 14 3/4" long and 12 1/4" wide. This piece was recently deaccessioned from a museum in Grand Rapids, MI. It was gifted to the museum in the 1930's by Anton G Hodenpyl, a philanthropist in the Grand Rapids area. He deeded 40 wooded acres near Grand Rapids to be preserved as a park, now known as Hodenpyl Woods. The base retains two old museum tags - one of which reads "Winter View Pittsfield - Mass. Clews - Art Staffordshire Hodenpyle" The other tag is probably an inventory or catalogue number that reads "70.5.74" **Any bright white spots you see in the photographs are light glare - this was really hard to avoid and I apologize!** Buyer pays for actual shipping costs. Indiana residents add 6% sales tax. Please visit my other auctions by clicking on "view seller's other auctions" above.
