Historicaly important watercolour by General Sir John Miller Adye (1819-1900) of the Valley of Balaclava, the scene of the Charge of the British Light Brigade on October 25th 1854, probably painted in real time. Measures 21" x 17" in mount (unframed) and has a visual image of 15" x 10", there is a small tear about 1/2" to top on painted which could be hidder by new mount and has a crease about 1" on rocks (see images) otherwise colours are still clear and bright. To the backing board are two inscriptions reading: "92 St Gin*** Square Thursday January 2nd 1893 Dear Mr Marshall I will send you by post a sketch, it is not very good, but is interesting, from the scene of the celebrated Charge of the British Light Cavalry in the Valley of Balaclava during the Crimean War. With my kind regards I am Yours sincerely, John" "To my dear Son Francis Elliss Marshall should he survive me I give this drawing by my cousin General Sir John Adye. January 16th 1894" Also label for William Innes (late James Wyatt) printseller, carver, gilder and frame maker. Inscribed on painting bottom left corner "Scene of the Light Calalry charges, Balaclava - 25th October 1854" also signed bottom right corner General John Adye with a further signature on paper sticker.
