Historical Staffordshire transfer ware ironstone platter Measuring 13 ½ " by 10 ¼", this octagonal platter is of a lovely soft blue design on a white base and carries a mark of " Ironstone - Abbey - L.P. &Co " (photo). It dates no later than the 1840's to 1850's. The décor is of a romanticized English abbey in ruins, with a stream, a charming rock bridge, and a group of people visiting the ruins (It appears that one of the individuals is telling the others about the history of the abbey, gesturing with an outstretched arm). Fascinating are the mirage- like, somewhat ghostly, images of faded, distant ruins in the background, seemingly conjured up in one's dreams of antiquity. We had never seen this particular effect before, and it must have required considerable skill on the part of the artist who applied the colors. The scene is framed by a commanding and quite elaborate border, with 4 medallions of another abbey intertwined with scrolls, and 6 different alternating borders. The platter is richly and nearly completely covered with transfer designs, and imparts a luxurious, majestic and warm early Victorian flavor. It is in wonderful condition. While t are miniscule edge and back rubbings due to its age, and while t is some crazing and wear on the back, t are absolutely no cracks, chips, or restoration work. The glaze on the read more
