THE NINTH MARINES: A HISTORY OF THE NINTH MARINE REGIMENT IN WORLD WAR II; WITH LISTS OF THE OFFICERS AND MEN WHO SERVED FROM ORGANIZATION TO DISBANDMENT, 1942-45. By Luther D. Burrus, and others. Wash., Zenger, 1985 (reprint of 1946 ed.). 375 pages, illustrated. Fine copy, in dust jacket. As new. The Ninth Marines, part of the 3rd Marine Division, participated in the invasions of Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima. It was on Iwo where the Ninth won a Presidential Citation and where every company commander was either killed or wounded. It was also on Iwo that the Ninth’s regimental headquarters was blown up by explosives hidden in caves beneath the hill on which it was situated. All this and more is chronicled in the pages of this book, which traces the history of the Ninth Marine Regiment from its origins in 1942 to the end of the war. First published in 1946, the original edition of this book has become one of the scarcest of all books about the Marine Corps in World War II. Listed in Moran's Marine Corps Bibliography, p. 263.
