ULTRA RARE! No Reserve!
The complete set of FIRST EDITION three volumes ( Vol I, Vol II, Vol III ) "History of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity" by the renowned SAE William C. Levere published 1911. Blue cloth with with gilt accents on leather, 488, 490, 520 pages. Has the signature of a "Broadus Thompson" on front page. This is the definitive history of SAE. Can't tell you how rare these volumes are. Covers are in Nazarene blue cloth and leather. This is the 1 st edition and not the subsequent editions that were slightly smaller and had different covers (I have included a picture of what the more common, but still very rare, 2nd editions notice color contrast for comparision purposes). Vol. 1 and Vol 2 are in fair condition because the leather parts are wearing out due to age (otherwise they would be in very good condition). Vol. 3's leather spine is missing, but the binding is still intact and the book can still be opened and read without falling apart . As mentioned previously, if it weren't for the leather parts these books would be in very good condition. While the exterior looks out of shape the interior is pristine and like new. Many of the pages have not even been cut or opened! THESE ARE VERY RARE. It's full of Sigma Alpha Epsilon history and rare pictures. In fact, the book contains many original photographs of the SAE founders, not those modern oil paintings of them that vaguely resemble them (check out the photo of Noble DeVotie and his younger brother Jewett, or Newton N. Clements who was the first initiate of Alabama Mu). Fascinating aspects speak of the early founding of the SAE, why it was founded, and how the badge was an imitation of the Delta Kappa Epsilon and the Phi Gamma Delta fraternities at the University of Alabama among other things. Many pictures of original items like the Founder's personal affects such as original Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity pin badge, sigma alpha epsilon oration medals etc. Has numerous full page plates, photos, and illustrations, including 3 gold and nazarene purple plates at the frontpiece ( chromo litho frontis in each volume) : Flag of SAE, Minerva Patron Goddess of SAE, and the Seal of SAE . Just try and find another complete set of these SAE books! Would be a great addition to any SAE chapter library. Shipping by USPS is $19.75 due to weight and size. Each book is about 9 inches x 6 inches x 3 inches and all three together weigh in at 12 lbs, 14 lbs with box and packaging. Don't let an opportunity to own these volumes pass you by! Like I said good luck trying to find another complete set of these books anytime soon! These volumes are a veritable gold mine for those interested in the history of the Old South, Civil War, Pre & Post-Civil War, Southern Fraternities, and most especially of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
