Graetz Jewish Publication Society, Philadelphia, 1891. Hardcover books with half leather 6 volumes octavo. 6 volumes green cloth half leather raised bands on spine with gilt lettering, green marbled endpapers, gilded top page edges,deckled page edges side and bottom, the name Abraham Baumwald embossed on the leather of the covers. T are four maps included with Volume 6, at the end of the book, in a pocket. The books are in very good condition with light wear on edges. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall THICK. The leather is in relatively good condition, not dry or crumbling; the gilt titles are also in very good condition. No foxing, tearing or writing in interior. Heinrich Graetz (October 31, 1817 - September 7, 1891) was amongst the first historians to write a comprehensive history of the Jewish people from a Jewish perspective. Born Tzvi Hirsh Graetz to a butcher family in Ksiaz-Wielkopolski (Poznan) in Germany (now in Poland), he obtained his doctorate from the University of Jena. After 1845 was principal of the Jewish Orthodox school of the Breslau community, and later taught history at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland). His magnum opus History of the Jews was quickly translated into other languages and ignited worldwide interest in Jewish history. In 1869 the University of Breslau granted him the title of Honorary professor, in 1888 he was appointed a Honorary member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences. Retails for over $850.00..
