1849 HISTORY OF NEW YORK WITH FOLDOUT ANTIQUE MAPS -- VOLUME II - 8 STEEL ENGRAVINGS AND 8 MAPS WITH 5 BEING LARGE FOLDOUT MAPS -- TREATISES ON STEAMBOAT DEVELOPMENT IN NEW YORK The Documentary History of the State of New York , arranged under the direction of the Honorable Christopher Morgan, Secretary of the State of New York. Volume II. by E.B. O'Callaghan, M.D. Published by Weed, Parsons, & Co., Public Printers, Albany, NY, 1849. First Edition. The book is bound in decorative brown cloth with tooled front and back covers and copper gilt titling and decorations on the spine. The binding was reinforced many years ago by 2 thick pieces of Morocco leather, one at the top and one at the bottom of the spine that neatly overlap to the top and bottom of the covers. T is bumping to the corners and minor superficial splits in the spine cloth which have been repaired. T is also some minor superficial splits w the spine meets the front and back covers which have been well repaired (see photos). The covers are firmly attached and the hinges work very well. The book measures 9 ½” tall x 6-1/2” wide x 3-1/2 inches tall. T are 1211 mostly immaculate, crisp, cream pages which have aged to a light ivory color. Volume II is arranged into 6 main sections: · Papers relating to Lt. Gov. Liesler’s Administration · Early Rate lists of Long Island · Manuscripts of Sir William Johnson · Early Steam Navigation , which contains: § “A Short Treatise on the application of STEAM, wby is clearly shewn from Actual Experiments, that Steam may be applied to propel boats or vessels of any burthen against rapid currents with great velocity. The same Principles are also introduced with effect, by a Machine of a simple and cheap Construction, for the Purpose of raising Water sufficient for the working of Grist Mills, Saw Mills, &c and for watering meadows and other purposes of agriculture.” By James Rumsey of Berkely County, Virginia. Printed for Robert Munro in New York City, 1804. · Index and table of Illustrations and maps (at the back of the book) This history has 8 full page steel engravings and 8 large fold out maps which are bound into the volume. The maps are in excellent condition and w t have been tears in the papers, they have been carefully repaired on the verso with archival tape. Maps are: · Plan of Fort Herkimer, 1756 (full page) · Map of Niagara River or the Straits between the Lakes Erie and Ontario by George Dember, 60 th Regiment – R.H. Pease Lithographers – Albany, New York. Foldout map measures 9-3/4” tall x 18” wide. · Plan of Fort Niagara with its Environs (full page) · Map of part of the Land in the Royal Grant devised by Sir William Johnson to some of his natural Indian Children. Surveyed by Lawrence Vrooman 1797. Scale, 20 Chains to an Inch and reduced one fifth from the Original Map. Lithographer, R.H. Pease of Albany, New York. Map measures: 10” tall x 13-3/4” wide. · ”Honor to Whom Honor Is Due”: Origin of Steam Navigation. A View of Collect Pond and Its Vicinity in the City of New York in 1793….” By John Hutchings, Williamsburg, Long Island, 1846. Large foldout map with insets of steel engravings of early steamboats, with detailed remarks and inscriptions, including the census of New York City from 1697 to 1845. This is known as the “Hutching’s Plate” (please see the photos).
