Double your traffic. HITLER’S MARBLE FIREPLACE AT BERCHTESGADEN . . . THE EAGLES NEST The item for sale is a piece of marble taken from Hitler’s marble fireplace in 1945 at Berchtesgaden . . . the Eagle’s Nest Phil and Libby Salmon were close personal friends in Summit, New Jersey, of my wife’s parents. Phil Salmon was a soldier in World War II, and retrieved two pieces of marble in November 1945 from the fireplace in Hitler’s great room in the Eagle’s Nest. In the late 1980’s, Libby Salmon included them in an estate sale at her home in Vermont, and I purchased both marble pieces as a fond remembrance of the family. The dimensions of the marble are 2-3/4” x 2-3/4” x 2”, and it is 3/4” high. The following typewritten words are pasted on the back: Italian marble was in the fireplace in Hitler’s great room at Brechtesraden and was retrieved by P. A. Salmon in November 1945 I have noted his spelling of Brechtesraden instead of Berchtesgaden, and do not know why he misspelled it. The Kehlsteinhaus (in English-speaking countries also known as the Eagle's Nest) is a chalet-style structure erected on a sub-peak of the Hoher Göll known as the Kehlstein. It was built as an extension of the Obersalzberg complex erected by the Nazis in the mountains above Berchtesgaden. The Eagle's Nest was intended as a 50th birthday present for Adolf Hitler to serve as a retreat for Hitler and place for him to entertain visiting dignitaries. The fireplace in the great room of the Eagle's Nest, made of expensive red Carrara Italian marble, was a birthday gift from Italian dictator Benito Mussolini to Hitler. The fireplace was extensively damaged by Allied soldiers who chipped off pieces of the marble for mementos. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe and later President of the United States, wrote that the U. S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division was the first to take the Eagle's Nest. Photographs and newsreel footage show 3rd Infantry soldiers relaxing on the Eagle's Nest patio, "drinking Hitler's wine", affirming that they were present at the house in May 1945. The Eagle’s Nest was subsequently used by the Allies as a military command post until 1960, when it was handed back to the State of Bavaria. After the return of the Kehlsteinhaus to German hands, an information centre was built on the foot of the hill to remind the public of Hitler and his regime. I have included three pictures of the marble fireplace taken in 1945. Feel free to ask any questions about this item.
