HO Liliput DB “Rhinegold 1952” Express Passenger Train Consist of 5, Era III This listing is for a gorgeous consist of Liliput Rheingold cars with First, Second and Third Class coaches plus a baggage car, which places it in the time frame between 1951 and 1956, so the Liliput label of “Rheingold 1952” is accurate, placing the train in Era III. In the 1930s, German State Railways were working on improving aerodynamics, and these efforts were not devoted solely to locomotives. Express train passenger cars were also given streamlined forms to increase travel speeds and decrease coal and water consumption. By the early 1950s, innovations included extensions of the side walls of the cars over the buffers, doors that were no longer recessed into the car, and skirting that covered the tops of the bogies (trucks). This skirting gave the type of car its name: "Skirted Passenger Car". The “Rheingold” was an express train which ran between Hook of Holland and Basel via Zevenaar, Duisburg , Cologne , Mainz , Mannheim , Karlsruhe and Freiburg between 1928-39. In 1951, the train was revived with the name “Rheingold Express”, using “skirted coaches” painted blue with the lettering DEUTSCHE BUNDESBAHN on their sides.
