In order to improve visibility over freight cars on the deck of a car float, the Railroad Tugboat was built with a taller pilot house. Starting in the 1920s, many railroads began modernizing their fleets with diesel-electric tugs. Not only did they use similar technology to the then-new diesel locomotives, many were painted in the same colorful schemes. These newer tugs remained in service for years, with a few serving new owners yet today. Ready to handle chores in any busy HO harbor, Walthers Railroad Tugboat builds into a detailed replica of the later diesel-electric designs.
