The model features open tandem cockpits that offer an unobstructed view of interior details such as pad-printed instrument dials and control sticks with hand-painted handgrips. The uncowled Continental R-680-17 radial engine provides a clear view of its cooling fins and pushrods on each cylinder head behind a fee spinning propeller. The fuselage, wings and tail surfaces feature simulated stretched fabric, visible ribs, and fine guaged wire rigging that has been hand-threaded to represent structural bracing wires. Canted landing gear and authentic U.S. Army markings with commemorative "Spirit of Tuskegee" nose art round out the details. Measures approximately 6¼" long with an 8" wingspan and arrives ready to display on the included stand. More than 9,750 Model 75 biplane trainers were built by Stearman and Boeing during the 1930s and '40s, serving throughout World War II and beyond. This Kaydet was manufactured in was based at Moton Field in Tuskegee, Alabama. It served as one of the basic trainer aircraft and played a very important part in the history of the African American men that would become known as the “Tuskegee Airmen”. These men were part of an experiment to prove to a racially biased white America that black men had the ability to learn to fly combat aircraft and earn their pilot wings. Those men that successfully passed basic training were transferred to Tuskegee Airfield where they trained on more advanced aircraft. Boeing PT-17 Stearman Designed as a primary trainer, the Stearman Kaydet was first flown in 1933. Prior to their aquisition by Boeing in 1934, the Stearman Aircraft Company developed a series of rugged biplane designs that culminated in the immensely successful Model 75 Kaydet, more commonly referred to as the "Stearman". The aircraft was adopted by the US Army Air Corps and US Navy as their primary trainer during World War II. The simple and robust design made surplus Stearmans a popular choice for crop dusters after the type was retired from the military and, in fact, a large number of airworthy examples still exist to this day.
