Hobo Nickel "Pandora" Howard Thomas OOAK
The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coins , essentially resulting in miniature bas reliefs . The nickel , because of its size, thickness, and relative softness, was a favored coin for this purpose. However, the term "hobo nickel" is generic, as carvings have been made from many different denominations.Due to its low cost and portability, this medium was particularly popular among hobos , hence the name. Howard was first on the eBay scene in the fall of 2002 when he was laid off from his job, with no warning. He quickly made a name for himself, with his beautiful scrimshawed ladies. However with the ivory ban in January of 2009, he almost had to throw in the towel. While he still does quite a few custom scrimshaw pieces, his new passion is carving the hobo nickels. And it appears again, that he is best at carving the ladies! So expect to see a alot more ladies in the future, however t will be a few other things to keep it interesting. This one he calls "Pandora". It is carved on a 1934 buffalo nickel. Please look closely at the pictures. We try to take the best photos possible and allow big enlargements so you can see exactly what you are getting! However it was brought to our attention that our pictures REALLY do not do the nickels justice, and any and all photographic advice is appreciated! I think the pictures now are at least better than before! Any and all comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated, since this is a relatively new adventure for Howard! All artwork is original.
