Whether you are a military equipment collector or are just looking for a super sturdy AC Generator set, this one fits the bill. This is a 1963 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Winterized AC Generator set. It has a Wisconsin Heavy Duty Air Cooled Winterized engine model: MAENLD, Serial number is 3513264, piston/bore size & stroke: 3" X 3.25", RPM: 3600, Specification Number: 200107, Net Cont. BHP: 6.05, Date: 1963. Carburator is a Bendix-Zenith L63E-12199C. The "Winterized" kit includes 120vac oil pan heater (not sure if that works) and an air temperature controlled cooling shroud for the cylinder head (that does work). Generator is made by HOL-GAR also in 1963. It is a 3.3kw (3300w) / 3750 watt peak, single and three phase generator that produces 120 volts and 240 volts in wye, Z, or delta. Maximum current in 120 volt delta operation is 31 amps, and maximum current in 240 volt Z-operation is 16 amps. Output voltage and winding configuration is easily changed using two heavy-duty 6 pole toggle switches inside the set operator panel. Panel has a standard grounded outlet for plug-in items and also has a power contactor for the larger loads that would be wired to the terminal board inside the panel. Pushing the buttons on the front panel causes the contactor to pull in, powering external loads. The lamp on the panel lights when the contactor is pulled in. Generator model number is 18984 and Serial number is 13178. I have had this unit for over ten years and have worked on semi-restoring it. The following parts have been replaced: Govenor assembly, piston rings, camshaft, generator shaft double-row bearing, Engine crankshaft Timken bearings, fuel filter, magneto points and condenser, plug and wire, undervoltage control relay, crank seals, valves and seats as well as oil pan gasket. The carburator has been rebuilt with a kit from Bendix. Over the past ten years I have had no trouble getting engine, magneto, control or generator parts from my local small engine shop and bearing house. T isn't much that needs replacing, but if needed, you shouldn't have a problem finding it. The engine has a cartridge type fuel filter, a mechanical oil and fuel pump, Fairbanks-Morse magneto, oil-bath intake air filter and premium quality Timken crankshaft bearings. Although this unit is over 40 years old, it has a lot of good hours left in it as a power source for the cabin, job site or hunting shack. I purchased it in non-running condition with 347 hours on it. I replaced the hour meter because the lense was broke and have only put about 4 hours on it since getting it running. The operator panel has a voltage meter, voltage level adjusting potentiometer, load meter, Standco reed type frequency meter (this is broken)-an exact Mil-Spec replacement is available for about $400, grounded duplex receptacle, start/stop push button and lamp for power contactor, hourmeter and military specification placards. On top of the panel is the complete operating instructions, wiring diagrams, and generator winding configuration diagrams on steel plate--very handy for understanding how it works and how to troubleshoot. One of the pictures shows a 500watt work light and a 1500watt electric heater running off the generator. Full load is indicated for the receptacles on the panel meter and my digital ammeter reads 14.5 amps (it probably doesn't show up very well). All output winding configurations work and the unit is fully capable of supplying 60 Hertz power at all voltages and up to its rated load. Because the reed freq. meter is broke, I have adjusted the govenor to hold 3600 rpm / 60 Hertz constant at varying loads using a Fluke 87-V meter. Output voltage can be adjusted as needed and the voltage regulator controls, current transformer and all under-voltage protective relaying works properly.
