The clockmaking firm of Hills and Goodrich had their manufactury in Plainville-Farmington, Connecticut around 1841. This handsome example of their work is known as a 'hollow-column' because the iron weights that operate the mechanism descend through the columns inside the case. The eight-day mechanism is clean and running perfectly. In addition to the beautiful case, this particular clock includes an alarm mechanism (see photograph)which the owners used to awake their family each day. These alarms are not used any longer by most owners, but the fact that it is still in the clock makes this a very special piece! The reverse painting in the middle panel depicts curtains that are drawn apart to allow the viewer to see the pendulum rod swinging back and forth as the clock operates (see photograph). The lower panel houses a mirror which is a later replacement. The case had a mirror originally, which was deteriorated to the extent that it was replaced. Overall---this one is truly OUTSTANDING!!
