Vintage Silver SHELL 9" Serving Bowl from The Ambassador Hotel Back Center is marked: THE AMBASSADOR Back Neck is marked : REED & BARTON (candlestick image) 60 JUST THINK OF THE HOLLYWOOD STARS THAT MAY HAVE USED THIS SHELL-SHAPED BOWL! The Reed & Barton date code (the candlestick figure) indicates it was made in 1955, a time when the hotel was filled with stars, sports figures, politicos. It has a lovely shape - a rounded neck sweeps down with graceful flutes to the full scalloped bowl. Perhaps it was used to serve side-dishes, or ice cream and scrumptious desserts, or was used as a tray to hold antipasto. It measures just over 9" across and about 4-1/2" wide at the widest part. It is just over 1" deep. This unique-shaped bowl is in really good condition - t are utensil scratches, some underside wear spots, a few little pits, one tiny bump, and some edge nicks. This tray is very nicely silvered, I believe it is silverplate although it is not overtly marked as such, and has that wonderful restaurantware weight. I have tried to capture the elegant silver look as well as the condition in my pictures - any glares and shadows aren't flaws, just my camera work! The lady from whom I purchased this shell tray said it was acquired at a yard sale in Los Angeles. Pls NOTE: The lighting in the full-size pics has a goldish tint - this is a very silver colored dish, and the 'neck' shot most closely represents the color. The Ambassador Hotel was located at 3600 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles CA. It opened January 1, 1921 and instantly became the place to be seen for the rich & famous of HOLLYWOOD. The hotel's Cocoanut Grove opened in April 1921 and became the premier nightclub for celebrities. In April 1930 the Academy Awards were held at The Ambassador Hotel and the Gold Oscar statue was introduced t In 1944 it hosted the first Golden Globe Awards. Many Hollywood legends held concerts, danced, partied or stayed t, including Judy Garland, Jean Harlow, Maureen O'Hara, Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks, Joan Crawford, Howard Hughes and many many more. Many films had scenes shot t, including: Pretty Woman, Forest Gump, Apollo 13, The Rat Pack, and many many more. The hotel is also forever remembered as the site of the shooting of Robert Kennedy in 1968. Sadly, the hotel was demolished in 2006.
