Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments, Together with the Apocrypha: Translated Out of the Original Tongues, etc. Philadelphia: John Edwin. Potter, 1863. Large sized ornate Victorian gilt blindstamped leather family bible from the Civil War Era, in great shape. Loaded with both black and white plates and even an engraved color plate illustration/family pages.. This Bible is gorgeous, adorned excessively and lavishly with gilt to spine, covers, page edges and more. Pages lightly soiled, all covers are attached, pages tight and binding sound; bad part is Bible begins at Genesis XV, also split in front cover binding, held by cords, and first 25 pgs or so detached or loose. Slight musty smell to Bible. All other pages present. All page edges gilt and shining. Beautiful gilt design to covers and spine, some light soiling/wear to covers but still in great shape. Spine shiny with little wear to extremities. A true relic from our Nation during its darkest times during the Civil War...one can only imagine what the family was doing during these times when this Bible was probably a very active player in their religious lives! The family record is from the ULLERY family, 1862-1877, from Dayton OH. There is also some empherema, including some merits, a handwritten letter, some business cards from the 1870s, and more.
