1934 Holbein Honorary Dagger by C. Eickhorn of Solingen 1 of 9,900 Ever 1934 Ebay, don't end this again. It has none of the nonsense you have said it does, check the photo's & do your homework. See end of this description regarding when it was ended sometime back. Check with the employee at Ebay who ok'd it for re listing. NOT POLITICAL !!! PRE WW2 !!! After much thought I have decided to part with this very rare & collectable piece. Probably one of the rarest knives you will see here. 1 of only 9,900 ever made. Here is a little info on a very rare Knife. The earliest depiction of this Knife appears on the Trajan Column in Rome (around 110 A.D.). The Knife is held by a Dacian (Barbarian). Later, made famous by the artist Hans Holbein, The Younger, the hilt appears in many of his works. The Knife was used from the 13th to 16th Century. Often called the Swiss, or "Baselard", it was a private purchase for the footed Pikemen as a secondary weapon. It eventually evolved into the Fascine Knife during the 19th century, it was used by Artillerists. During the early part of the 20th Century, it was adopted by the German Military. I have owned this for many years now. The Black Wood Grip is in exceptional condition for its age. There is light wear to the Grip, a tiny piece missing on rear upper left & a tiny crack above the Button. Button is solid in place. Not too bad or noticeable at all. It is in Excellent condition for 79 years old. The Crossguards are of Nickel, this is totally in line with the production of this piece. This will give them a much longer life over the later Mazac/Zinc type pieces. The lower Crossguard Mark is III for Berlin Inspection Office prior to distribution. This also bears the owners personal number, 25,931, making it even a more desirable item. Nearly 90% of all Honorary Daggers have the owners number on them. The Button is Near Mint in condition. The Hand Made Solingen Blade is still very bright. It does show both Cross Grain, 50%, & the usual Scabbard Runner Marks. A used blade of such age should show both wear & very minor deterioration. The usual Etch to blade front. All lettering is very Crisp, Sharp & Beautifully preserved. Excellent 9 out of 10. The Tang is correct in every way, it has the usual Bench/Clamp seam to each side. This is where the Blade was held to work. The Tang shows much fire scaling & pitting. Overall the blade is very good. The Moto side tip has had a polish at some point, not by me, there is a small amount of scratches at the very end. This could be more than improved on with very minor work, see photo's. The Blade Has Not been Re Tipped or Tip Damaged & is 22 cm from Lower Guard to Tip. I am being very honest in my description, the Blade is really very good overall. The Tang fixing Nut has a few scratches where it has been undone during its life. This was not done by me, it has always had these scratches & grip marks. Check the Photo’s. On the reverse is the Carl Eickhorn Solingen Signature & Small Squirrel Logo. This was the only logo used by Eickhorn for the signed blades. There were only ever 9,900 of these Etched blades made between February & late June 1934. This of course has been Factory Ground off, by order of the Forestry High Command on July 4th 1934 . You can still make out some of the Serifs, see photo 6 & you can spot the remnants. A none ground blade these days is worth in the region of $40,000. One of the rarest knives around. This is a very good substitute, until you make enough money to buy the intact signed knife.lol. The Scabbard is the Early Black Anodized Type. This Anodizing is 85% intact & complete. It is the original period Anodizing & has not been re touched at any point. The Throat Guard is in very good condition with 1 screw missing, I can source another easily but will need a couple of week to get it to me. Fixing Ring has been removed to attach Vertical Hanger, a very normal procedure for such blades. The base Scabbard Ball is scratched but not dented. Both Screws remai...
