Now You Can Help Too! Genuine Wood Kachina Doll Signed "Jerry Left Hand" ~ 15.5" Tall This beautiful hand crafted Hopi Kachina doll was brought in with another mate (see our other items ). This one is signed "Jerry Left Hand" with the title "Broad Face Kachina" -- we believe this is carved from cottonwood but it could be pine. The broad face kachina is most likely a Guard Kachina. This category of Kachinas may be called either guards or warriors. When they appear individually they function more as sergeants-at-arms or policemen. In this role they either enforce an action such as the communal cleaning of springs or as a guard to prevent the approach of anyone or anything to the proximity of a location or ceremony. However, with the passing of years many of these functions have been lost as springs are converted to water systems and trails or roads become the province of highway departments. When they appear as a group such as in the Powamu Procession or during Pachavu times they are functioning as warriors. They surround the more sacred kachinas as a small but ferocious army of fearsome creatures. From these actions comes their name Ichivota or Angry Kachinas or as they are often called, the Watching Kachinas. Many of the Guard Kachinas carry yucca whips which are indicative of their roles as warriors, protectors, and overseers. In some instances, such as the fearsome warrior He'-e'-e', the Guards may serve to protect certain ceremonies from the potency of other kachinas. While we failed to receive the certificate of authenticity, one can merely look at this and tell this is the real McCoy. A wonderful addition to your collection. 's a little more about us: In early 1989 five parishioners and the rector from St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church invited other local congregations to a discussion on forming a chapter of Habitat for Humanity in Chatham County, NC. Sixty-five individuals showed up at the Pittsboro Public Library--and Chatham Habitat for Humanity (CHFH) was launched. Shortly after, the program received Official Affiliation with Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit Christian housing ministry that works to eliminate poverty housing throughout the world. It took over a year to organize, plan, raise funds, and recruit volunteers before ground (or more accurately, red clay) was broken for the first house on February 3, 1990. At a dedication on September 16 of that same year the first Chatham Habitat homeowner partners received the keys to their new house. A veteran of those early days commented: "The air was charged with excitement and t were dreams of the wonderful things those dedicated volunteers were planning to do. T was confidence and faith that God would help them see it through." In the intervening years, CHFH has added staff, opened two resale stores (Home Store and Home Store Too), constructed a permanent location for the resale business and administrative offices and, most importantly, has partnered with over fifty families to build and purchase homes. Your support will help us continue our mission to build community by constructing houses with the goal of eliminating substandard housing everyw Visi...
