Up for auction is a Hopi Kachina, described as follows:

Tribal affiliation: Hopi. Artist: Chester Poleyestewa. Age of carving: Contemporary, New Traditional style. Condition: Excellent, no defects to report. Dimensions: 12.5" to top of feathers. Media used: Cottonwood root. Classification: This is Situlili, aka Zuni Rattlesnake, also Rattlesnake Kachina (Colton #211).

Other comments:

The background of this kachina is a bit unclear - although Situlili is Zuni for Rattlesnake, Harold Colton notes that the Zuni do not claim this to be one of their kachinas and, according to Barton Wright, this Kachina instead shows up as a Guard in the Hopi Pachavu and Powamu Ceremonies.

Chester Poleyestewa is a well-established carver and has a unique identifier in his work - his carvings are often thick and squat, not unlike the human figures portrayed by the famed Columbian painter Fernando Botero. In addition, his pigments are peculiar to him: the tones are very pastel, made so with the addition of tempra paint that also creates a 'stippling' effect to the paint texture.
