is an authentic Hopi MONGWU(A) or OWL Kachina from the 1950-1965 range, and he is in excellent condition for age. I have been collecting Kachinas since 1975 and the pics do not do this Kachina justice, it has aged well, the paints look great, and he is a well carved, painted and overall put together Kachina. The Kachinas are spirits who live in the San Francisco Peaks (an "extinct" volcano) near Flagstaff, Arizona, they come down at certain times of the year to interact in their various forms with the Hopi People on the three ancient Mesa Pueblos. You can visit the Hopi Mesas to see them dance in their human form, t is even a hotel t now - see the Hopi Website! Expertly carved and painted by a master Hopi Kachina carver/maker - the initials GW are on bottom of feet as well as OWL. A Great looking and Well Carved and Painted Kachina made in the traditional style! He is 13 1/2" tall (to tip of wood head feathers), and is about 7" wide at fists. A wall hanger but he also stands on his own. Excellent condition for age - just a cracked shoulder. Note the fine carving and paint job.
