At first they were 0 gauge, then in 1938 Hornby invented 00 gauge and has remained the most popular ever since. Many a school boy was kept entertained during the World War 2 by the Hornby train set. Hornby had faced stiff competition, mainly from Bachmann, Heljan, Dapol and Peco. So in 1995 production was moved to China, cutting costs and improving quality. Hornby now produce some of the most spectacular and detailed models, and this can be seen in the Skaledale range of resin buildings. Since then, Hornby have gone from strength to strength, purchasing Lima, Jouef and Airfix, and in 2008, bought Corgi one of the world's oldest and most prestigious makers of collectable die-cast models.
