We List 10-12 Pieces EVERY DAY! This dynamic depiction of a Horse Race Track Betting is an original 1970s oil on canvas by the accomplished Modernist, Emil John Hess (1913-2003). The gestural, loosely painted crowd of people fill the scene in the lower portion, giving way to the lively action of the television broadcast of the Horse Race. Men rush to the front to get their bids in before the time is up. Each slight touch of his brush to the canvas has been a flurry of movement of energy that captures the essence of the time-honored sport and the subsequent game of chance that results. The pastel colored washes add imagination and color to the scene, elevating the ordinary! His aesthetic and subject matter have recently been taken up by such contemporary art hot shots as Daniel Richter, Peter Doig and others, some 50 years since Hess revealed his style to the world. Gestural and hectic, the artist's work has challenged the strict divisions between painting and drawing. Hess's technique: bright washes and unrestricted line work, have earned a staple position in contemporary painting vocabulary, and rightfully so!
