Here is a very rare 1904 era – two piece hot food casserole - cover and underplate being offered as a set from the famous Hotel Astor that was located in New York City. This set is also rare in the fact that the dome carries the Muschenheim name on it, which is the earliest and rarest version of marked Astor silver plate. If you collect New York City items, you might want to consider this set for your collection.
Historically, the Hotel Astor was opened in the fall of 1904 by the two German immigrant brothers, William and Frederick Muschenheim. The hotel was located in what was to become the Times Square area of New York. The land that the hotel was built upon was leased from William Waldorf Astor and the hotel was named after the Astor family. The hotel had the famous German Hunting Lodge, French Parlor, The Palm Garden -"L'Orangerie (done in a Mediterranean theme), the famous Roof Garden (this was truly a sight to be seen), and the Indian Grill Room. The hotel was also located directly behind the historic Minskoff Theater and located on Broadway between 44th and 45th Street; which it was advertised as being in the center of New York’s social and business activities at Longachre, which again, was soon to be called Times Square. The hotel itself was a beautiful 11-story French Renaissance Beaux Arts architecture style that was created by architects Charles W. Clinton and William H. Russell. Clinton and Russell designed the Hotel Astor with many of the same features from the old Waldorf -Astoria in NYC. The hotel was one of the most upscale hotels in the entire East Coast area. However as time went on, the hotel was closed and demolished in 1967 to make way for an office building called “One Astor Plaza”. This dome set would have been used in the dining rooms, Indian Grill Room, roof top garden, banquet rooms, restaurant, or even for room service, and used in connection with the Astor Hotel silver soldered – silver plate and glassware for table service. Both are the heavyweight type Steamship, Lunch Counter, and Railroad china and are no souvenirs; rather, authentic hotel china. These pieces were both made by the famous Jos. Heinrich’s Silver Co. in New York City – Paris, France. Heinrich made some of the finest hotel silver plate items, with many of his customers being New York City Hotels, Restaurants, and Clubs. Both pieces are silver soldered. The hot food cover is marked “HOTEL ASTOR”, but also has the rare “Muschenheim” name in cursive under it. Additionally, it has “JOS. HEINRICH’S – PARIS – NEW YORK – SILVER SOLDERED” on the bottom. The underplate only has “HOTEL ASTOR” on it, and is marked “JOS. HEINRIC’S CORP – NEW YORK – NICKEL SILVER” backstamp. Both have the usual light usage scratches, minor usage indentations, and silver plate wear. The dome has two (2) great looking handles on each end that greatly enhance its appearance. Both were made to go together and look very nice! The set has been thoroughly cleaned and would be very well suited for actual functional usage. A wonderful addition to your Home Decorating / Home Furnishing / Interior Decorating, or New York City Hotel China Collection. The digital images do not show the original item that well. The actual item looks much better than what the digital images shows it as. Buyer to prepay item along with $9.99 which includes shipping, packing, and handling in the United States.
