Superb Silverplate Carafe with California's Arrowhead Springs Hotel Crest (1897 - 1966) Hotel Silver Crafted with Reed & Barton's Quality ca. 1897 This lovely hotel silver carafe or pitcher just gleams - both the silver and the multi-faceted glass. This is a beauty. It was made for the Arrowhead Springs Resort, located at the foot of the San Bernardino mountains in southern California . This resort area has a history which goes back to 1851 - see the history info below. This lovely pitcher has a silver soldered frame and was made by the International Silver Co in 1946. It is nice and heavy, weighing a fraction of an ounce shy of 4 lbs. These carafe's are hard to come by intact like this - wouldn't this make a fabulous addition to your hotel silver collection, or to your table to wow your guests? The carafe measures about 4-3/4" in diameter at the pedestal, 3-1/2' in diameter at the glass rim, 7" handle-to-spout, and 10" high to the top of the floral finial. This piece sits nicely on the table, there are no dents or bends, and the silvering is excellent, nice & smooth for the most part, with light nicks, scratches and a few blemishes. The silverplate top doesn't quite close flush with the glass. The frame is removeable, it has one screw holding it together near the handle so you can adjust it. Marked underneath: 'I' 'S' (each in their own cartouche) INTERNATIONAL SILVER CO SILVER SOLDERED 0 5 0 7 4 (a '5' was rubbed out under the '4') '46' in a square = 1946 'U' and '150' on the lid match the same inside the lower handle 'ARROWHEAD SPRINGS' is marked below the handle Arrowhead Springs Hotel - Southern California (1939 - present) In 1851, 500 Mormon settlers in 150 wagons arrived at the foot of the "arrow-marked mountain" seen in a vision of Brigham Young, and established the city of San Bernardino before continuing west to the Pacific. Some years later, David Noble Smith, a young pioneer in search of the perfect therapeutic waters around which to create his dream of a " hot springs infirmary," built the first known structures on the site and opened them to the public. Since that first sanitarium, three hotels with spas have been constructed at Arrowhead Springs over the years. Each reflected its era in style and function. The most recent hotel, built in 1939, the year of Gone With The Wind and The Wizard of Oz, remains exquisitely intact to this day. Designed by Paul Williams, one of America 's foremost black architects, the distinctive original Art Deco elements of the Arrowhead Springs Hotel are closely reminiscent of the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel, another Hollywood landmark. With a budget of $ 1 million, the famed interior designer, Dorothy Draper , created the unique furnishings and decor of the hotel which still exist. The grand opening in 1939 featured stars, including the Marx Brothers, Judy Garland, Al Jolson, Rudy Vallee and Jimmy Durante. This was the destination of choice among celebrities. Elizabeth Taylor spent her honeymoon in the penthouse at age 17 with Nicky Hilton. Humphrey Bogart, Lucille Ball, Susan Hayward, Clark Gable and Eleanor Roosevelt frequented the hotel. The swimming pool was named after Esther Williams whose movies were shot on-site. Later, stars including Danny Thomas, Jerry Lewis, Mitzi Gaynor and Rocky Marciano were regular guests. In 1962, Dr. William Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ , purchased the property. The hotel was completely refurbished and a new dormitory and cafetorium complex was built nearby, known as Arrowhead Springs Village . Other additions include a 2,300 seat outdoor theater, dedicated by Billy Graham in 1967, administrative buildings, and the Atkinson Memorial Chapel.
