Hotel La Mamounia Marrakech vintage silver sugar bowl Vintage silverplate lidded silver bowl from Hotel La Mamounia, Marrakech, Morocco. "Reminiscent of a faraway time and place, La Mamounia evokes a modern day fairy tale..." The hotel, which opened in 1923, was designed by architects Prost and Marchisio who combined traditional Moroccan designs with the popular Art Deco look of the 1920's. Situated on the edge of the walls of the old city of Marrakech, La Mamounia is named for its 200-year-old gardens, which were given as an 18th century wedding gift to Prince Moulay Mamoun by his father. La Mamounia is the hotel that Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day stayed in in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Man Who Knew Too Much." Winston Churchill once called La Mamounia "The most beautiful place in the whole world," and had a suite named in his honor. He met t with Roosevelt for the Casablanca conference in 1943. Sugar bowl has large embossed & chased floral medallions around the lid and relief patterning on the feet. Lid marked "La Mamounia" in script next to the finial. No other markings. T are tiny pit spots in the interior well of the bowl, as pictured. The exterior of the piece has light surface marks and duller spots due to age. 5 1/4" height to finial. 4 5/8" diameter.
